2018 Basin Honor Band

You should all register for this opportunity.  It is not required, but you would be foolish to not do it.  Seniors it is a last chance to play some new music before you leave us.  Don’t miss the chance.

Marching Band Time

It’s time to start planning for the next Marching Band Season.  We will be again hosting some Saturday events to introduce what we do to potential students.  The first such event will be held on March 3rd in the band room at the HS.  The other dates include April 7, and two Saturdays in May.

We are in the process of creating an Honor Band for the region.  The dates for that have not been set yet, but will likely require us to cancel one of the May MB clinics.  As soon as that information is locked in we will update you.

Either way you will want to keep both May 12 and 19 free for band.

National Honors Ensemble Auditions

Students may now apply to be in a National Honors Ensemble.

We are excited to announce that applications are NOW OPEN for the 2018 NAfME All-National Honor Ensembles. This year’s event will take place November 25-28, 2018 at Walt Disney World’s Coronado Springs Resort in Orlando, FL. The 2018 program will also include our first-ever All-National Honor Guitar Ensemble! Attached please find the 2018 promotional flyer, and ensemble selection procedure. You can find all current information about the 2018 ANHE program at nafme.org/ANHE.

I think we are good to go / Sweat Week Info

The new site has finally been migrated to the new server.  We should be over the humps now and good to go.  If you find anything missing that you would like access to let me know and I’ll add it.

Sweat Week starts Monday.  Remember that practice is from 7am to 2pm Monday through Saturday.  After 2pm I ask that the kids not make any other plans.  If we need the extra time to finish stuff or have sectionals I need the kids there.

New Content from original post:

There is no acceptable excuse for missing Sweat Week!  If a student misses any of this week they will be removed from the band.  It is that important.  If there is a once in a lifetime conflict that you really think warrants missing some of this week the student must meet with Mr. Gibson in person prior to the conflict.  The more notice the better.  Only if Mr. Gibson says it is approved will it be ok to miss.  Do not plan on Mr. Gibson approving anything.

Old post continued –

We will have a short parent preview Saturday about Noon.  Feel free to come see what we have done.  We will even give you a chance to try what they are doing.  Wear some comfy shoes and something easy to move in.

End of the season?

Really? Marching Band can’t be over yet, it just started.

Most years when we get to this point of the season I am ready to be done with marching band and move on to new stuff, but this year it feels different. I’m not tired of the show yet, I’m not tired of the bus rides yet, I’m not ready to kill my drum major yet, and the drama has even been less intense this year. Plus what the crap is up with the scoring and judges this year? Every band in our division has finished in the top 4 and bottom 4 this year. There has been no real consistency at all. I feel like I’m on a very expensive roller coaster ride, and I don’t want it to stop.

This is the last week of the “Colors” show and then the seniors will get all teary for the first time and we will need to move on. Usually I’m already thinking about next year, and honestly I haven’t wanted to go there yet.

So for those of you who have procrastinated seeing our show you only have a couple opportunities left. Wednesday night at 7pm w will be performing at UHS for the last time. Friday and Saturday we will be in St. George. Make sure you come see this show. It is the best one we have ever done, and I can’t wait to see if we can pull off a placement at State this year. It is going to be close, either way.

To the parents I just want to say, “thanks.” I love these kids and I can’t think of a better group to have spent the last 5 months with. To the seniors I want to say, “how dare you grow up? What were you thinking?” To the younger kids I want to say, “let’s go get ’em next year!”

Concert Band Concert Black

So I have been thinking for years now that I want to change the concert band uniform at the high School.  In fact I would love to move the whole program to a more traditional look.  The look I want to move towards is called “Concert Black.”  Traditionally this means that the ladies are in a black long dress.  (Alternately ladies could wear an all black pant suit.)  The men are in black tuxedos.

Now since I am trying to be money conscious for the people, who like me, have little here are the options:

1.  If you have what we have been wearing you may continue to do so.

2.  If you want to get your own concert black outfit, you may do so.  (Check out YouTube videos of professional and college bands and orchestras to see what I mean.)

3.  You may order from our new DeMoulin store.   https://store.demoulin.com/mystore/UintahHigh

If you order from DeMoulin shipping has been included in your cost and all the items will be shipped to the school.  The deadline for orders is Mar 12.  If you order the vest gentlemen you don’t need the cummerbund.

It is my intention to phase out option number 1 and encourage members to move to option number 3.  If you will be in the band for a few more years you should just do option number 3 now to avoid the cost in a year or two.
